RPWMC HISTORY

On Thursday 18th May 1911, a group of working men assembled at a house in Arch Street, and decided to start a club. At the meeting was Mr J. Wallbank, who owned property in the town and had a vacant property at 5 Anson Street (now Johnson’s the Jewellers), who allowed the group under the chairmanship of Mr W. Edwards (the sham duke) to rent this property. The brewer John Davenport & Sons of Birmingham were approached and agreed to finance the club, and fit it out.

The club was officially opened at 6.30pm on Saturday 3rd June 1911.

In May 1918 the club joined the federation of clubs centred in Birmingham, and later that year, after finding out the premises was going to be sold, acquired the derelict premises of Turnock’s in Bees Lane, Davenport’s were again approached and agreed to help, the decision to purchase the site was taken on 14th February 1919, and under the guidance of Mr. W. Rogers, the architects work commenced, then finally on 16th March 1921 the Bees Lane Club was officially opened, and joined the Club and Institute Union (CIU) in the same year. The Bees Lane Club eventually closing in early 1980’s.

In 1950 with growing membership, the Mansefield House site was purchased and was opened to members in November 1951.
The “Mansefield” is today a thriving club with around7-800 members, and we are proud to allow serving members of the Forces free membership to our club.

The club has a superb bowling green to the rear of the club, and we also play indoor bowls (winter months). We have two snooker tables and a pool table, and play crib, dominos and darts.Live enertainment
